Name: Michelle Thompson

Current Role: Workplace Consultant

RJE Location: Indianapolis, IN

How long have you been with RJE?

13 years

What led you to RJE?

Beth Ford – one of our longest tenured employees who retired a couple of years ago (after almost 30 years). I sold Beth her home when I worked with a custom home builder in 2009. I knew then that I wanted to free up my weekends to spend with my husband and kids, so I asked all of my homeowner customers to keep their eyes open for something that might be up my alley based on how they know me. Beth immediately said, “you should do what I do!” I wrinkled up my nose and told her it did not sound fun…until I finally went to the RJE website and saw PEOPLE and FUN and FAMILY…not just furniture and design. That was January of 2011, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

What has been your favorite project so far?

Oh, so many! They are all so unique and wonderful in their own ways, so this is hard to say. Also, it’s not just the end-result and design of a space that make them my favorites…when I think back to projects that I enjoyed, I think of the people I worked with. If I have to pick one off the cuff, I will say I loved working with the team at Arlington/Roe. Jim Roe and his team have been long partners of RJE, and I loved seeing them get into a new space that is updated, fresh, and reflects their culture so well.

What is your favorite thing about working at RJE?

The peeps. I need fun in my life in order to feel fulfilled, and the people I work with are truly amazing. Every single day, regardless of stress or workload, I laugh. And that is a must!

Describe RJE in three words.

Family. Hugging. Experts.

What does hugging your customer mean to you?

Truly putting yourself in a customer’s shoes and thinking about what they could be thinking or feeling. Whether it is from the first time you meet them, through the design process, or to the install and way beyond…. people turn to RJE because they need our help and trust us. So hugging means to be there for them, honestly and professionally, and to do all the big and little things that make them feel special.

What does an inspiring space include in your eyes?

Lots of natural light, places outside of your main focus workspace where you can go for privacy, collaboration, or socializing. Areas that are warm, cozy, welcoming, and provide hints of a residential feel.

What can customers expect from working with you?

Honesty, a true listener, a guide through the process, and someone who will do what I say I will do.

What is your current favorite product from Allsteel and its portfolio of brands?

My current favorite (and maybe all-time favorite) is the high back Retreat swivel chair. I fell in the love the first time I sat in it.

Describe yourself in three words

Generous, joyful, dedicated

You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Silly Celery.  I don’t know why.  Just go with it.

Which emoji do you use the most?

🤣 Sideways laughing face.  And…. I just had the urge to use it there.

Favorite way to spend your free time

Hanging out with my family and our best friends playing games. We have a closet of probably 100 games. I am also a singer in a couple of local bands, and we perform around Indianapolis about once a month or so. Check out The Hippie Dream (The musical commune) and The Bumpus Hounds

Cats or Dogs?

I love both. I have neither. I guess I would say dogs, but I could never devote the time to take care of a dog. Two kids is enough.

Favorite place you have ever been

Tossup between Turks and Caicos and Banff Canada.

Favorite downtown Indy spot

Ummmm, Penn and Beech Candle Company. I have a bit of an addiction to making those candles! For real.

Favorite movie or tv show at the moment

I’ve watched Ted Lasso four times now, so I’m going with that. I also just binge watched the first three seasons of Friends, because it is a forever all-time favorite.
